The Photographs. The orchestral pieces are inspired by three of Henri Prestes’s photographs.

 

These atmospheric photographs of deserted places, taken at night, were the starting point.

I love Prestes’ work & wanted to try to evoke something of the atmosphere of the photographs

in a series of pieces.

 

There developed a kind of loose narrative behind the 3 pieces -

one that charts the journey of a woman facing up to forces that are trying to define her. 

 

It’s a story of descent.  

 

Piece one shows the start of a journey in a car, at night on an isolated road in fog.  

 

In piece two a woman is walking alone at night towards an unlit building. 

 

Piece three shows a kind of radiance in a desolate place - hope.
